Attributes

Attributes are the qualitative data points that you can use to segment your sales data. All the attributes listed here are automatically detected by Book Report.

Attributes are used to segment your sales data. For example, you can choose which attribute you'd like each slice of the pie chart to be, or each row of the table.

Book Attributes

Book

The book attribute displays the title of the book. Multiple editions of a book are grouped together under one title. If you have an ebook, paperback, and hardcover published through KDP, as well as an ebook on D2D and an audiobook on ACX, all of those will be grouped together under the same title.

Author

For each transaciton, this attribute is set to the author who wrote the book involved in the transaction. If you have multiple authors for a book, the first or primary author will be used.

Series

If you use the distributor's tools to list a book as part of a series, that will be detected and displayed here.

Publication Year

The year the book was published. If the book was up for preorder, the publication year is the year the preorder period completed and the book became available.

Format

The format of the book. Possible values are:

  • eBook
  • Paperback
  • Hardcover
  • Audiobook

Co-author, Editor, Illustrator, and Translator

These attributes are collected from KDP's "eBook Details" page where you can add contributors. If you have multiple co-authors, editors, illustrators, or translators, they will all be listed and separated by commas.

Book ID

This attribute is the unique identifier for each book. Each edition of a book will have a different ID, as will the same book published through different distributors. It's best used alongisde our spreadsheet export feature, where you can use this ID to run your own analysis.

Transaction Attributes

Marketplace

The marketplace where the transaction took place, regardless of who you published the book through. Possible values include:

  • Amazon.com
  • Amazon.co.uk
  • Amazon.de
  • Google Play Books
  • Apple Books
  • Smashwords
  • Barnes and Noble
  • Kobo

Distributor

The distributor you published the book through. Possible values include:

  • Kindle Direct Publishing
  • Draft2Digital
  • Google Play Books
  • Kobo Writing Life
  • Barnes & Noble Press

Transaction Type

The type of transaction. Each distributor defines their own transaction types, and these are passed on to Book Report.

Country

The country where the transaction took place. Countries for KDP sales are inferred from their Amazon marketplace; most other distributors provide the country directly.

Royalty Percentage

The percentage of the sale price that you receive as royalties.

Offer Price

The price at which the book was sold. This is converted into the currency you have set as your default in Book Report, and grouped into price ranges. For instance:

  • $0.00
  • $1.XX
  • $2.XX
  • $3.XX

Date Attributes

Book Report can break your sales down by date, month, or year. These refer to the date the transaction took place, not the date the book was published.

Not Set

Book Report does its best to determine ever attribute for every transaction in the system, but it's not always possible. If an attribute is not set, it will be listed as "Not Set" in the report. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • KDP not reporting the price when a book is borrowed through Kindle Unlimited.
  • Barnes & Noble not providing the country of sale.
  • A book having been sold and then taken down before first using Book Report. Sometimes this means Book Report cannot determine a book's attributes.
